Acupuncture is emerging as a growing trend in alternative fertility treatments, and becoming more popular with both doctors and patients. Some studies have noted a dramatic increase in fertility following acupuncture treatments, while other studies have been inconclusive. However, acupuncture is generally thought to improve your overall well being, so using it as a fertility treatment can be just an added benefit.

Acupuncture with herbal treatments

When used as an alternative fertility treatment, acupuncture is sometimes combined with herbal treatments. This allows the patient to experience a completely holistic fertility treatment regimen.

Acupuncture with Clomid, IUI & IVF

However, more and more these days, doctors are also prescribing acupuncture treatments in conjunction with use of fertility drugs such as Clomid, and with fertility treatments such as IVF and IUI. How exactly can acupuncture help with fertility problems? For women with hormone imbalances or problems with ovarian function, acupuncture can help to regulate these imbalances, improve ovarian functions, and increase blood flow to the reproductive organs.

Some doctors also suggest that having a 30 minute acupuncture treatment session before and after IVF can help the embryo to implant, and also reduce the risk of miscarriage. In fact some doctors recommend beginning acupuncture treatments in the months leading up to IVF treatment, and continuing treatments throughout the entire IVF cycle, and during the pregnancy as well.

Acupuncture as stress reliever

Even for doctors who don’t recommend acupuncture treatments to their patients, most of them agree that if a woman decides to do them on her own, it is her choice, and will not harm her efforts to get pregnant. Even if acupuncture doesn’t help with fertility, there is no arguing the fact that it can be a beneficial stress reliever for women who are going through the difficult process of fertility treatments.

Acupuncture = no side effects

If a knowledgeable acupuncturist is used to do the treatments, which is always recommended, there are little to no risks involved with acupuncture, which makes it a great treatment choice. There are no side effects or added risk to the mother or baby, which is great.

Really, acupuncture can be used to treat or help treat any fertility issue, even fertility issues that are unexplained or unknown. It can even help to improve sperm quality and sperm count in men, so women are not the only ones who can reap the benefits! Talk with your doctor and see what he or she has to say about acupuncture treatments in your particular case.
