What Is Clomid?

Clomid is probably the most well known of all fertility drugs. It is the brand name for the drug clomiphene citrate, and is also sold under the brand name Serophene. Clomid is the most widely and commonly used of all fertility drugs. Clomid is used when there are problems with ovulation, such as ovulating irregularly or not at all. It is also used for women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Clomid is usually the first choice when prescribing fertility medication.

How Is Clomid Used?

Clomid is usually taken orally, in pill form. It is easy to take and usually tolerated well. You take Clomid during one five day cycle each month. Clomid will help your body produce more of the hormones that trigger ovulation, and helps your body to produce one or more mature eggs. When those eggs are released, they have a chance to meet up with a healthy sperm and cause conception.

Any Side Effects? What about twins?

Clomid has very few side effects as far as fertility treatments go. The side effects are usually mild, and can include mild stomach pain, breast tenderness, nausea and vomiting, weight gain, fatigue, etc. If you are trying to get pregnant, these are minor Clomid side effects since they are also symptoms of a healthy pregnancy as well. However, there is one very well known side effect of Clomid. The chance of having twins while on Clomid increases to around 10%. Still not a huge chance, but a bigger chance than normal.

How Much Does It Cost?

In the USA, one round of Clomid treatments will run around $50. This is the cost without insurance for only one cycle. You will also have to factor in the cost of the doctor’s visits, ultrasounds, tests, etc. If you have insurance coverage, it may or may not pay for some or all of Clomid treatment. You will have to check with your insurance company to make sure.

Success Rate?

Clomid has a track record of being one of the most successful fertility medications. About 80% of patients will begin ovulating successfully while on Clomid. The rate of women who get pregnant while taking Clomid is around 40-45%, within six cycles of use.

It is not usually recommended that Clomid be used for more than six cycles. This is the point when other fertility methods will probably be started if you have not had success with Clomid by this point. If you have any additional questions or concerns about Clomid, talk with your physician.
