Ditch the KY & Astroglide

This might come as a surprise, but most chemical based lubricants have been proven to be toxic to sperm and can really inhibit and hurt conception rates. The studies that were done showed that most of the vaginal lubricants on the market today were harmful to sperm, including KY and Astroglide.

Cervical mucus only good lube

Even on it’s own, the acid in the vagina can kill sperm. That is why cervical mucus is so important, because it protects the sperm as it travels. When you add a lubricant to that mix, it is just a recipe for disaster (aka sperm killing). Studies have shown that most all of the lubricants on the market today, even the “water soluble” ones, are known to be sperm killers.

Some doctors even unknowingly recommend lubricants to couples that are trying to conceive, when the lubricants could be part of the problem. There are a lot of “sperm friendly” and “conception friendly” lubricants on the market right now, but some of them have a really high price tag.

Are natural lubricants OK?

Some couples try to use “natural” or home based lubricants, such as vegetable oil, baby oil, or even egg whites in place of a lubricant. While these might be safer than the chemical based lubricants that are on the market, they come with their own set of risks. You can get an infection or allergic reaction to using some home based lubricants as well.

Warm water might be your best bet if you are looking for a home based lubricant. Or just crank up the foreplay and use your body’s natural lubricant if you want to make sure it is completely safe! It is important to talk with your doctor if a lack of natural lubrication is a consistent problem
