First of all, deciding that your baby is “too fat” is not something that parents can do on their own. Not at all. Every baby is different, and even babies that are the same age and the exact same weight will carry that weight differently. There is no way to make a determination about a baby’s weight being too much unless a doctor does it. Doctors can take into account a baby’s birth weight, height, rate, head circumference, and other growth milestones to determine whether or not your baby is gaining too much, too fast.
Okay, before you start worrying about your baby’s chunky cheeks and thunder thighs, remember, babies are born with extra fat for a reason! Babies need to be chunky in order to keep warm, and most experts agree that babies who are considered “overweight” are a very small minority. Most babies are chunky, and that is perfectly normal, and just fine!
Many times, moms can be contributing to making their babies fatter without even realizing it. Of course, babies need high fat diets, but make sure that you aren’t turning to the breast or a bottle when your baby might really need something else. Go through a few different options first, and see if what your baby wants is not food related after all.
If you are pregnant and concerned about having a too big baby, watch your weight during pregnancy. Gaining too much weight during pregnancy can lead to having a baby that is too big, and that can turn into a toddler, and then a child that is too big. By monitoring your weight from the start, you are being proactive about the health of your baby.
If you have any concerns at all about your baby’s weight, ask your doctor to take a look. Your doctor will be able to access all of your baby’s medical records and then can let you know if you need to be concerned. If it does look like your baby is a bit bigger than he or she needs to be, your doctor will be able to help you come up with a plan of action to take care of everything and get back on the right track.
