Clomid is the most popular and most commonly used fertility drug on the market today. For women struggling with PCOS or ovulation problems, Clomid is the go-to drug, and is usually the first drug of choice of every fertility doctor. Clomid is given orally and is taken for five days, usually on days 5-9 of a woman’s cycle. Metformin is a drug that is usually used to treat women with PCOS who are having a hard time getting pregnant. Metformin was not created to treat PCOS. In fact, PCOS is not even on the list of things that Metformin is supposed to treat. What is Metformin designed to treat?
Insulin resistance for people with diabetes. Women with PCOS also often have insulin resistance, so Metformin can help treat their insulin resistance, and in turn, can help them resume ovulation. Sometimes, Metformin is also given to women who are resistant to Clomid, or who have suffered with repeated miscarriage.
In Feb 2007, The New England Journal of Medicine published a study titled: “Clomiphene, metformin, or both for infertility in the polycystic ovary syndrome.” The study followed 626 women who were infertile and diagnosed with PCOS and gave some of them Clomid, some of them Metformin and some of them both. Then they studied the live birth rates of all three of the groups.
The group who received just the Clomid had a birth rate of 22.5%, the group who received the Metformin had a birth rate of 7.2%. The group who received the combination of the Clomid and the Metformin together had a birth rate of 26.8%. So, by looking at the study, Clomid is the best option for inducing ovulation. Taking both together is also a good option, but Metformin by itself isn’t the best choice.
Every situation is different, and every case is different. Your doctor will tell you which option is the best for you. Some cases might benefit from adding Clomid to Metformin, or vice versa. There are some cases that Metformin alone is going to be the only option. In other cases, Metformin won’t help, and doctors won’t want to prescribe what isn’t necessary. There is no way to really tell in general which option is the best.
