There are a ton of fertility medications on the market right now, Clomid probably being the most well known and common one on the market at this time. The brand name Clomid costs about $80 for a 5-day course. Generic versions of Clomiphene however can be found online and at discount retailers like Walmart, with discounted rates between $10-$30 for the same 5-day course. Its relative inexpensiveness is why its the first to be prescribed and the most commonly used.
Femera is another popular fertility medication as well. Like Clomid, this medication is taken orally and used to induce ovulation. Femara will cost more than Clomid, upwards of $200 per month. While this is far less than injectables, it is still a pricey alternative. Additionally, most doctors will want to combine Femara (and Clomid) with an Intrauterine Insemination treatment that will raise the costs more.
These are much more potent drugs than the oral medications, and they will cost you more too. They usually run between $1500-$2000 per month, and are usually combined with Intrauterine Insemination as a combo treatment. This can really increase the cost. Brand names may include Follistim, Menopur, Repronex, Lupron, and Novarel.
To help counter male infertility, this process can remove weak and unhealthy sperm and is very inexpensive, only costing around $150.
Artificial insemination is the process of having sperm injected directly into your uterus. This process runs usually between $800-$1000.
Surrogates are fertile woman, who will carry your baby to term. Whether you are using your egg & partner’s sperm or some combination of donor eggs & donor sperm, the resulting embryo is implanted into the surrogate’s uterus. Surrogates can be very pricey, because they are never covered by insurance.
If you use a surrogate that you know, such as a friend or family member, the costs will be much less, around $10,000 or $15,000. However, if you choose to go through an agency, costs could increase up to as much as $100,000 since there are so many other people involved who have to be paid.
IVF is probably the most successful treatment option, and it comes with a very high price. This is where the eggs are removed, mixed with sperm, and then implanted back into the uterus. The average cost of this procedure is between $7000-$15,000.
During IVF, your doctor can remove an egg and have it stored (frozen) for potential later use. This is especially used for older women who are nearing the end of their childbearing years, to use at a later date. Total cost: Approx $2500.
As women age, the number of eggs she has is far depleted, and the eggs she does have are of much lesser quality. Donor eggs are using another woman’s healthy eggs to fertilize and implant into your uterus, for you to carry to term. This process is a very expensive option, usually $25,000+. With the success rates not all that stellar, this is probably one of the most risky options, since it comes at such a high cost!
If your partner is the one with low sperm count or poor sperm quality, perhaps donor sperm are the way to go. This fertility treatment is super cheap, at around $300-400. Definitely one of the more low cost options on the infertility treatment scale!
