What is ectopic pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy in which the a fertilized egg implants somewhere outside of the uterus. The egg continues to develop until it begins to cause physical pain and problems for the mother. An ectopic pregnancy can not ever become a viable pregnancy, and it can cause extreme pain and complications for the mother. Sometimes ectopic pregnancies can even be fatal for the mother. Unfortunately, there is no procedure that can remove a fertilized egg from a location outside the uterus and implant it inside the uterus.

HCG levels in ectopic pregnancy

Although there are usually not many outright signs of ectopic pregnancy, one way that ectopic pregnancies can be noticed is through looking at HCG levels. The HCG levels in an ectopic pregnancy are lower than the HCG levels in a normal pregnancy, often much, much lower. Rarely, HCG levels in an ectopic pregnancy will not even be high enough to be detected on a home pregnancy test. However, HCG levels should never be the only factor used to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy. This is because HCG levels can vary widely between women. They should never be the sole factor used to determine whether or not you have an ectopic pregnancy.

Other signs and symptoms

Sometimes there are not any signs or symptoms associated with ectopic pregnancies. Sometimes women might find out through the lowered HCG levels. Other times, there might just be some strange symptoms that a woman might not recognize. Some of the classic symptoms of ectopic pregnancies can be pain in the lower back or abdomen, dizziness, fainting, or vaginal spotting or bleeding. If you suspect that you might have an ectopic pregnancy, it is very important to see a doctor right away, and since sometimes complications from ectopic pregnancies can be extremely harmful, even fatal, to the mother. So get help right away.
