You have been trying… a long time

Doctors define infertility as the inability to get pregnant when a couple has been actively trying for at least one year. For women over 35, the time frame shortens to six months. So, if you have been trying for this amount of time with no success, it might be time to see a doctor.

Your periods are really light… or really heavy

Having extremely light or extremely heavy periods can be a sign that something is out of whack with your reproductive system. Sometimes crazy periods can even mean that you are not ovulating at all. If your periods are very heavy or very light, seek a doctor’s advice to see what this might mean for you.

Painful intercourse or periods

A telltale sign that something is not right with your reproductive system is painful intercourse or painful menstrual periods. These things can be a sign of endometriosis, which can cause infertility. If your periods or sex are especially painful or even uncomfortable for you, it is a good idea to get checked out by a doctor.

You have weird symptoms

Sometimes the symptoms of some issues that can affect fertility have nothing to do with the reproductive system at all. One disorder that can affect fertility that has weird symptoms is PCOS. PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome often causes excessive hair growth, acne and obesity. If you notice some or all of these symptoms, you might want to get checked for PCOS.

Something feels “off”

Many fertility issues will have no symptoms at all, and you might not even have any indication that something is wrong. If you ever get the feeling that something is “off” with your body, it is very important to have it checked out as soon as possible. You are often the only advocate for your health, so if you have a suspicion that something might be wrong, you need to be the one to speak up!
