Low sperm count in men is actually pretty common. It is one of the most common male fertility issues out there, and there are a ton of things that can affect sperm count. Lifestyle, genetics, diet, and more can affect a man’s sperm count. However, what about sex? Can having sex a lot cause low sperm count too? Today we are going to explore that topic and find out. Before we figure out if sex can decrease sperm count, we need to know what exactly is normal. The World Health Organization says that:
• There should be at least 20 million spermatozoa per ml to be in the normal range.
• There should be at least 2 ml of semen in the total volume to be in the normal range.
• There should be at least 40 million spermatozoa in the ejaculate to be in the normal range.
• A minimum of 75 percent of the spermatozoa should be alive to be in the normal range.
• A minimum of 30 percent of the spermatozoa should be normal shape and form to be in the normal range.
• A minimum of 50 percent of the spermatozoa should be swimming in a forward direction.
With that said, it is pretty obvious that sex does impact a man’s sperm count, at least temporarily. Each time that a man ejaculates, his sperm count will be lower. It does take the body awhile to replenish that sperm count. Doctor’s don’t always agree on the time frame that it takes for sperm to be replenished, but the average time frame is around 24-48 hours. Of course, this amount of time can vary between men. Each man’s body is different, so there is no “right” number.
The fact that having sex too much or too often can diminish sperm count can be confusing for a lot of couples who are trying to conceive. Most couples believe that the more sex they have will give them a greater chance of getting pregnant. While this is true, to a point, there must be time given in between to allow a man’s body to replenish his sperm count. Most doctors suggest that guys wait at least 36 hours between each ejaculation when they are trying to conceive to allow their bodies to build up their sperm count again.
On the other side of the coin, it is also possible that a man who doesn’t ejaculate enough can have problems with male infertility as well. For lack of a better term, sperm that are “fresher” seem to be stronger and faster swimmers. Sperm that have been produced but remained in the body for awhile can be less viable. Doctors suggest that a man go no longer than a week between ejaculations in order to maintain his optimum fertility.
