Effects of Excessive Heat on Sperm Count

Effects of Excessive Heat on Sperm Count

If your man is having problems with his sperm count, it could be that heat is to blame. Yes, heat. Excessive heat has been shown to have adverse affects on sperm count. Believe it or not, low sperm count is actually the most common fertility problem. The testicles are actually located outside of the body instead of inside like a woman’s because sperm need to remain a few degrees cooler than the rest of the body for optimum sperm health, and having the sperm outside the body allows it to remain cooler. Hot showers

The effects of excessive heat on sperm count will not be seen by the average guy who takes a hot shower daily, however. The exposure to excessive heat would have to be much greater than normal for the average guy to have a negative effect. However, if a man works in an excessively hot climate or has a job that forces him to be around excessive heat for long periods, this could affect his sperm in a negative way.

Hot tubs

The same is true for a man who spends a lot of time in a hot tub, sauna or hot bath. A few short trips to a hot tub or sauna will not negatively affect him, but overdoing it can affect men’s sperm counts negatively.

Workplace hazards

The same is also true for men who spend a lot of time sitting in one position, such as taxi drivers or truck drivers, since the sperm can become overheated from being in the same position for too long. Also, there has recently been some research done that suggests that men who spend a lot of time with their laptops or iPads in their laps can be at risk of overheating their sperm and damaging their fertility as well, but more research is needed into that.

Heating blankets/waterbeds

Heating blankets and waterbeds can also provide unwanted heat and therefore damage to the sperm as well.

Tight clothing

Some doctors also believe that spending a lot of time in tight clothing, such as wrestling team members or avid bike riders, can also cause the sperm to overheat and can lead to fertility problems as well. Tight biker shorts and wrestling outfits can constrict the testicles causing too much heat to build up, potentially damaging the sperm.

Although some of these triggers are just speculation and there is no real evidence that all of these things contribute to low sperm count, doctors advise men to try to avoid high heat situations as much as possible in order to stay away from potential problems.
