Am I Pregnant? False Positive Pregnancy Test

This can be a heartbreaking experience for any female. Your period is late and you are so excited that it may have finally worked- you think you are pregnant. You take that home pregnancy test and it says “+”. How exciting?! You cannot help but to be anxious to get things rolling with the doctor and announcing the news. Then a few days later you may start your period, or the doctor may tell you that you are not pregnant… what happened? Claim Your 20 Free Pregnancy Tests – Click Here

Chemical pregnancy

This is considered a false positive pregnancy test. There are many reasons for a false positive pregnancy test, each individual in how and why they happen. A chemical pregnancy is usually the most common cause of a false positive pregnancy test. By definition a chemical pregnancy is “Miscarriage or spontaneous abortion is the spontaneous end of a pregnancy at a stage where the embryo or fetus is incapable of surviving.” This is a horribly graphic definition in my personal opinion. A chemical pregnancy is when you are pregnant; you have recently conceived but have had an early miscarriage, thus starting your period. This can be caused by a luteal phase defect, deformed sperm or eggs, or outside factors such as drug or alcohol abuse.

Drug interference

Drug interference is another possibility, though it is not very common. However, if you have been receiving fertility treatments and are using medications or receiving injections that contain the Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) chemical, it can interfere with a pregnancy test. HCG is what your body makes once you are pregnant and typically that is what home pregnancy tests check for. That is what makes the lines show up on the test. If you are indeed on any medication with hCG in it, please have your doctor test for pregnancy.

Invalid tests

Invalid tests are more common than you would think. (I have had one myself actually! It said negative, however I was very pregnant with my son, and I was in serious denial that we conceived so quickly!) Moving on… Invalid tests can work three ways. One, you can let it sit too long before reading the results- thus causing it to be invalid and possibly showing a positive when in fact you are not pregnant. Two, you may not urinate on the test as much as required and causing an invalid reading (half positive for example). And Three, more pregnancy tests are made in a factory where things go wrong sometimes, you may get a test that shows positive no matter who is urinating on it. This does happen from time to time.

Evaporation lines

Evaporation lines can sometimes be mistaken as the crossing line of a “+” on a pregnancy test. This line is there in the test window on some tests. It’s faint and shows up so that you are to know that the test is working correctly (while that is not always the case). Some women believe this faint line makes the positive and believe they are pregnant. Be sure you are reading the correct window.

I personally prefer to see my doctor so that I know definitively and can get put on prenatal vitamins as quickly as possible. If you believe you are pregnant, it is your choice, but be aware of all the possibilities when it comes to tests.
