So you want to learn more about fertility injectables? Fertility injectables are popular and usually quite effective fertility drugs. They are usually the second choice of fertility doctors. They are most commonly prescribed after a first round try of oral fertility medications (less invasive, and less expensive) have been given, but have failed to work. Fertility injectables are also known as gonadotropins. The hormones in injectable medications are a bit more potent than in oral medications, and that is why they sometimes work better for some women.
Gonadotropins stimulate the ovaries and help to jumpstart the production of eggs. They help your body to produce several eggs at once. Injectable medications are most usually used in combination with another treatment, such as IVF or IUI. If you are receiving injectable medications, it is important to be closely monitored by your doctor to make sure that every thing is going smoothly.
The shots usually begin around day three of your cycle. They will last for seven to twelve days, depending on how long it takes your eggs to mature. You can give the shots yourself or have a family member or friend do it for you. As I said before, the doctors will need to monitor you closely to see when your eggs are mature.
When your eggs have matured, you will get another injection of hCG. You will then ovulate around 24-36 hours later. You will be sent home to have sex, or if you are doing IUI, it will be scheduled for a couple of days later. If injectables don’t work, your doctor will probably let you try them for three to six cycles, but no more than that. After that you will probably move on to another method if they don’t work for you.
There are a few side effects, such as abdominal swelling, tenderness, bloating, and soreness. The chance of conceiving twins when taking injectables is also higher, and falls somewhere between 10-40%. However, the success rate of these medications is pretty high, around 30-60 percent of women who try it get pregnant with this method. The cost can be pretty high though, with one single cycle costing between $3000 and $5000.
