Ovulation tests have the role to determine when ovulation occurs and, consequently, when is the most probable time to conceive. As everybody knows, ovulation is the key to pregnancy, being the most fertile time of the monthly cycle. You can have intercourse all through the month, but if you miss your 2-4 day fertile window of ovulation, then you have no chances of becoming pregnant.
An ovulation test or Ovulation Predictor Kit (OPK) will determine, in advance, if you are going to ovulate, based on the level of luteinizing hormone, which rises before ovulation. This test contains anti LH (luteinizing hormone) antibodies in the sensitive membrane used for testing that will come in contact with the urine.
Ovulation tests may come in 2 forms: test strips and midstream tests, depending on the way in which they are used. In the smaller & less expensive test strip, you have to introduce the strip in a container you have filled with urine. In the larger midstream applicator test, you urinate directly on it as you would a pregnancy test. Also similar to a pregnancy test, there is a control line & a second colored line on both tests which will indicate a positive or a negative result, according to the presence of a second line. 2 lines=ovulation; 1 line=no ovulation
A positive OPK result means that ovulation will occur in the next 24-48 hours, and so in the next 2-3 days, you are at your most fertile. So, an ovulation predictor kit is very useful, because it anticipates the best time period in which to conceive.
If you cannot find a free ovulation test and you cannot afford to buy one, there are always handy methods to replace it. Ovulation can be determined by various other means. Most women use one of the oldest methods: the calendar. Usually, ovulation occurs halfway through the menstrual cycle and an average cycle lasts 28 days counting from the first day of period to the next month’s cycle. Of course, it may vary, so keeping a record may be very useful.
Another common method to determine the point of ovulation is taking the basal body temperature. This has to be done with a special basal thermometer. After ovulation occurs, there is a huge increase in the level of progesterone. As a result, the body temperature will significantly increase. As in the calendar method, a chart has to be kept over a few months’ time in order to determine the exact moment of ovulation.
There are many other ways to anticipate ovulation, but in order to get precise information you should use a combination of these methods.
