Fat is good

Doctors think that since fat cells in the body are the ones responsible for producing estrogen, and because estrogen is so important to reproductive health, that not having enough fat in your diet can actually make it harder to get pregnant.

Women who do not have enough fat in their diet might suffer from irregular periods, anovulation, and other infertility problems. On the other side of the spectrum, women who are overweight might also have a hard time getting pregnant, but in their case, because they suffer from too much estrogen, due to having too much body fat.

Underweight women at risk

The women who are most at risk for fertility issues due to not having enough fat in their diets are women athletes who don’t eat hardly any fat at all. We have all heard stories about athletes who train so hard that they stop having periods altogether. While these women are the ones most at risk, since their bodies contain little to no body fat, other women can be at risk as well.

If you eat a diet that doesn’t contain any full-fat foods, you can be at risk as well. Eating low fat or fat-free dairy products can lead to fertility issues, just like exercising too hard and having no body fat can lead to fertility issues. Both can be cause for concern when it comes to fertility.

What should I do?

The most important thing you can do to make sure that you are getting enough fat in your diet is to make sure that at least some of the dairy products you eat are full fat and not low fat or fat-free. Even eating full fat ice cream one or two times per week can really improve your fertility as much as 40%. Of course, just like with everything else in life, moderation is key.

You have to make sure to get at least some full-fat dairy in your diet, but if you take it too far and eat too much full-fat dairy, that can compromise your fertility as well. You have to keep it somewhere in the middle! As you can see, it’s not so much what you eat, it’s more important that you have a healthy balance with all things in your diet.
