Who wants to admit they do not know how pregnancy tests work? Not a single female I know would admit that- however, I must admit I have Googled it myself because I was indeed curious! What a random thing to think about, but I had to know the answer!

What is hCG?

First let me start with one basic piece of information that is a necessity for testing with home pregnancy tests. From the moment of conception your body begins to create human chorionic gonadotropin (hcg). This is what the baby needs to develop and grow inside your body.

How pregnancy tests work

The home pregnancy tests are all made about the same. Whether you are asked to dip the stick in a cup of your urine or if you have to place the stick in your urine stream first thing in the morning; they work all the same. They test for HCG in your urine to determine if there is an implanted egg in the uterus. If it detects hCG in your urine, then the test turns positive with 2 lines, or a plus sign or what have you.

Follow the directions

When you are using a pregnancy test you should be aware that not all tests work the same, follow the directions to the letter to be sure to get the best results. It is very important that you follow the directions on the test.

Some tests can test sooner than others while those that require you to test after the missed period mean just that- they will not give you a positive prior to the missed period. If all else fails please speak with your doctor about options that may be available to you.

Blood tests

Your doctor may decide to run blood tests; typically the pregnancy blood tests are more effective than a home pregnancy test. The blood test takes just a tad longer though; you go to the doctor, have blood work drawn and wait for the lab to finish the results before they get back to your doctor and you get a phone call.

It makes me exhausted thinking about it all. However, this tests for the smallest traces of the human chorionic gonadotropin chemical. Usually this means that you can know sooner. Though if “sooner” means waiting a week for results, you might be better off taking a home pregnancy test.

False positive test results

There are false positive results sometimes, this is rare but it does happen. This means that at one point your body was creating the hcg but is no longer and you need to contact your doctor.
