However, for a lot of women who have irregular periods, it can be a lot harder to chart your cycles and it can be really difficult to determine when the right time for you to get pregnant is. Something that most people don’t understand is that even if your periods are irregular, you can still be ovulating regularly. Today we are going to give you some tips on how to calculate ovulation for irregular menstrual periods.

Chart your cycle

First of all, you should try to chart your cycles on the calendar for a few months to see if you notice any patterns at all in the way that your cycles line up. Even if you don’t end up getting pregnant on your own, and need to see a fertility doctor, having a calendar with your cycles on it will really help your doctor to figure out what is going on with you.

Observe your cervical mucus

You can also keep track of your cervical mucus, although this is not the most reliable method and it can be a bit unpredictable. When your period ends, you will usually notice a few days with little to no cervical mucus at all. After that, your amount of cervical mucus will gradually begin to increase up to ovulation.

When you are ovulating, your cervical mucus will be very much like egg whites, clear, stretchy and thick. The day that your cervical mucus is most like egg whites is the day of your ovulation. This is one reliable way to calculate ovulation, but it might take some getting used to.

Monitor your basal body temperature

Another way is by taking your basal body temperature daily. You can do this with a special BBT thermometer. You have to take your temperature every day, sometimes even for a couple of months before you notice a difference.

When you are ovulating, your basal body temperature will rise by as much as a whole degree. While of course, this is a reliable way to determine when you are ovulating, it can really take some getting used to and is not as convenient as just using a calendar to track your ovulation based on your menstrual period. It is a good alternative way to determine your ovulation though, if your periods are irregular.

Use an ovulation prediction kit

You can also get a ovulation prediction kit over the counter at any drugstore for a good price, and you can use it to track your ovulation as well. These ovulation prediction kits are really easy to use and are much like a urine pregnancy test. If none of these methods work for you, you can always have your doctor do some simple blood tests for you to determine if you are ovulating or not. As you can see, there are ways to tell if you are ovulating even if you do have irregular periods.
