But, did you know that there is another way to track your ovulation as well? You can track your ovulation naturally (and cheaply!) by paying close attention to your cervical mucus and your basal body temperature (also known as BBT). BBT is the temperature of your body when it is at rest. It is the lowest temperature of your body within a 24 hour period.
To begin charting and tracking your BBT, you will have to get a special BBT thermometer. These are usually fairly inexpensive and can be found at most local drugstores. The special thing about a BBT thermometer is that it can track your body’s temperature down to the tenth degree, and they are very precise.
So, first thing in the morning, take your temperature with one of these thermometers. Don’t even get out of bed, don’t use the restroom, or take a drink of water. Take your temperature before you do anything else. It should always be the first thing you do in the morning.
Now, after you begin taking your temperature, make sure you do it every day, at the same time every day. Leave a pen and paper beside your bed, and write down your temps each day. After you have taken your BBT for a few weeks to a month, you can begin to analyze the data.
Right before you begin to ovulate, you should notice a sharp drop in temperature followed by a sharp increase in temperature. When you notice the temperature drop, that is when you should begin having sex; since it will be the time you are most likely to get pregnant.
When you see the rise in temperature, it means you have already ovulated. For this reason, the first month or so of charting will be only for taking notes and noticing your cycles. Don’t expect to be able to use BBT to get pregnant right off the bat. You will have to learn what to look for.
So, after taking temps for a few months, you should recognize the temperature drop that takes place before ovulation. That is when you should try to get pregnant. When you see that telltale rise in temperature that is when you have already ovulated. By learning how to chart your BBT, you should be able to tell when you are ovulating by your temperature alone. That is an easy, cheap and natural fertility treatment if we ever heard one!
