How to Get Pregnant Using an Ovulation Prediction Kit

Ovulation prediction kits (OPK) are used by many women to help them predict their most fertile times of their menstrual cycle, ovulation. During the ovulation your body begins passing an egg allowing you to be more susceptible to the fertilizing sperm. But how do these kits work? Is it a fine science? Or is it a big guessing game? Using ovulation prediction kits

Ovulation prediction kits are made so that when you urinate on them it tests for the luteinizing hormone which your body secretes during ovulation. It can test positive up to twenty-four hours prior to the beginning of ovulation.

This is made so simple; nothing can go wrong, right? Wrong! Much like everything else in our world, there can be problems. The test simply determines the presence of the hormone that does not mean you will definitely pass an egg. If your body is releasing the hormone but not the egg the tests will not benefit you and you will need to speak with your doctor about further actions.

Ovulation charting

Much like any other product, please follow the directions on the box as closely as possible. They are there to help you understand your test and make it as easy for you as possible. Also try to record your results on a calendar each month and see if there is a pattern that you can try to catch so that you know when you might be ovulating in order to have intercourse. But please be warned that sometimes your body can have a luteinizing hormone spike even when you are not ovulating.

Patience is the key

On to the good stuff! While using your ovulation prediction kit (OPK) you are essentially trying to get pregnant. That is, after all, the purpose, right? Once you have began using your tests you might get discouraged if the test says negative, but not to worry, just wait for that positive.

That positive is your green light to try like crazy for a few days. This is your ovulation time and your most fertile time in the month, take advantage. During these times have intercourse once a day which should be enough. Be patient if you do not get a positive the first month.

The luteinizing hormone peak is brief and needs to be acted upon as soon as possible. If you miss that spike you may have simply missed your chance that month. There is another month. If you go two months with a negative, please contact your doctor.

Speak with your doctor

A few other questions I would like to address here:

What if your test says positive a lot? This may be an indication that you have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and need to speak with your doctor about further testing.
What if you never receive a positive? Call your doctor, this could mean you are not ovulating at all and need to try to be on medications to help you ovulate on a regular schedule.
What if you have a test that says positive for more than three days? If this happens once or twice I would not be concerned. However, if this constantly happens speak to your doctor.
