All of these feelings, both good and bad, are perfectly normal. It is hard to contemplate having a healthy pregnancy when you have experienced so much loss in your life. However, today we are going to try to give you some tips on how you can make sure you have a healthy pregnancy after infertility.

Don’t expect to feel “pregnant” right away

When you have spent a long time defining yourself as unable to conceive, or infertile, it can be a really dramatic adjustment to throw yourself into the world of being pregnant overnight. It might not feel “right” or “natural” right away. For the first few months at least, expect pregnancy to be a foreign concept to you, and don’t expect it to feel “right” from the very beginning. It can take a while to ease into your new role as pregnant woman, much like it can take a while to ease into any other life change. Don’t think that you are “weird” or “crazy” if you don’t feel comfortable being a part of the “pregnant team” right away!

Find the right doctor

For many women, the transition from fertility specialist to regular, general practice OB/GYN can be tough. In some ways, you are starting all over again with a doctor who doesn’t know anything about you or your history. Finding the right doctor is very important in making sure that you feel safe and secure through the duration of your pregnancy. Find a doctor who is the right choice for you, and one that you can feel comfortable talking to about your body and your previous and/or current issues. Finding the right doctor, midwife, or healthcare provider for you can really go a long way towards making sure your pregnancy is a healthy and stress-free one!

Stay as healthy as possible!

Cutting out all bad habits and anything that could potentially be a problem for your pregnancy is important. Try to exercise daily, drink plenty of water and eat a healthy diet. Get enough sleep and try not to stress yourself out too much. Of course, it should go without saying, to avoid smoking, even secondhand smoke, drugs and alcohol, or any other potentially dangerous substances. Also, you might want to join fitness classes for pregnant women to help you to stay at your physical best. Yoga is also great for de-stressing you and keeping you mentally strong and focused as well. The short of it is, try to make your body as much of a perfect place as possible for growing a baby!

Have a good support system

Getting pregnant after infertility and loss can be hard on you not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. By having a good and trusted support system nearby, you can ensure that you will be as healthy as possible. There are likely to be a lot of feelings (both good and bad) that come up during your pregnancy, and you should have someone to talk to. If you don’t feel like you can talk to your partner, family or friends, try a counselor or therapist that can help you work through whatever feelings you are having. That way you will be prepared, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well, to be the best mommy you can be!
