Irregular Periods and Getting Pregnant

Having irregular periods can be annoying, that is for sure. But, when you are trying to conceive, having irregular periods can be downright troubling. It can be very difficult to chart your cycles and hard to figure out when you are ovulating if your periods are irregular. But, it is not impossible. You are not alone

The problem of having an irregular menstrual cycle is very common, and almost thirty percent of women experience irregular periods. So, take heart in the fact that you are not alone! There are a few things you can do to try to make getting pregnant a little bit easier for you. The first thing to do is see a gynecologist and try to determine the reason for your irregular periods.

Your doctor will be able to do blood work to see whether or not you are ovulating. Your doctor may also suggest that you chart your cycles and track your periods for a few months, to try to notice any patterns. You might also want to pick up an ovulation prediction kit to help track your ovulation at home. Maintaining a chart for basal body temperature can also be helpful.

How to regulate your cycles

You also want to work on anything that you can do personally to help regulate your periods. This can include stopping alcohol use, drug use, smoking, etc. You should also take up a healthy diet and include an exercise routine to keep your body in the best shape possible. You want to reduce any stress as much as possible, and make sure to stay positive.

It has also been suggested that Yoga and Pilates can help some women regulate their periods, so you might want to give that a try! Some doctors recommend foods high in plant proteins for regulating periods, such as peanuts, cheese, boiled eggs, hummus, and even dark chocolate! Give these foods a try and see if you notice a difference.

There are other things you can do that can help to reduce stress and also regulate your period. Some of those include meditation, massage and acupuncture. There are also a ton of vitamins and nutritional supplements on the market right now geared towards women who are looking to regulate their cycles. These can be helpful activities to engage in since it has been proven that stress can effect how and when a woman ovulates.

Every other day intercourse

Some people suggest that the most effective (but exhausting!) way to get pregnant quickly if your periods are irregular is to have sex every other day in between periods. The reasoning for this is, if you are ovulating anywhere in between your two periods, by having sex every other day, you are bound to have sex on a day that you are ovulating! This process could take a few months to work, but we are pretty sure your partner won’t mind! You might want to clear out your calender, however, since that much sex is going to take up a lot of your free time! 🙂

The bottom line

The bottom line is, even if you suffer from irregular menstrual cycles, pregnancy is still doable. It might perhaps take longer than it would if you had regular periods, but it is not impossible. You might have to become proactive in your quest to have a baby, and start doing research and getting more in tune with your body, but there is no research to prove that women with irregular periods are any less likely to become mommies than other women. It may just take a little extra time and patience!
