Two really important and common procedures in the fertilization process for women are IVF (or in vitro fertilization) and the IUI (also known as the intra uterine insemination). Here are a few things you should know about both of them, before having to choose IUI or IVF, once you’ve tried unsuccessfully with various fertility drugs for women first.

How fertilization is made

The first important aspect about the two is literally how the fertilization is made. While the intra uterine insemination requires that the fertilization happens inside the woman’s body, in the fallopian tube, the in vitro fertilization happens outside the body, in a laboratory.

IUI simpler than IVF

Another important aspect of these procedures is the fact that the intra uterine insemination is a much simpler procedure than the IVF one, because it doesn’t require collecting eggs from the woman’s body. On the other hand, IVF is much more complex than this, because it requires to have a surgical procedure done, in order to collect the eggs that will later on be fertilized in a laboratory.

Considering the costs

As if the psychological burden wasn’t enough, there also is a financial burden we should be thinking of when making our choice. From this point of view, intra uterine insemination is a much more affordable procedure at a rate of about $400-500 per cycle, not including the cost of the fertility drugs used alongside IUI. In vitro, on the other hand, can cost over $20,000.

You should be well-informed

While going through these kind of procedures a very important part to take into consideration is how well-informed you are. The intra uterine insemination has the disadvantage to offer limited information throughout the process, while in vitro fertilization is a more permissive procedure; this way, you will be informed all along the process about the egg’s quality and how the fertilization is developing.

Success rates

The most important aspect of this discussion is, in fact, which of the procedures has the highest success rate to this day, so you know what you should place your bets on. Considering this, scientists say that the intra uterine insemination has a lower success rate than the in vitro one (15% of the couples with a good prognosis make it), while in vitro fertilization has been known to work most of the times (the only exceptions being made by extreme cases).

These are the real facts about these procedures, so it’s really up to you if you choose IUI or IVF.
