What do we know about fertility? One of the things that we know more than anything is that diet really does matter. Eating right can really improve fertility, and not just for women! A new study done by Harvard University and the University of Murcia located in Southern Spain took sperm samples from young men between the ages of 18 and 22. There were no other factors such as alcohol or disease, or any medical issues that could cause a poor sperm result.
All of the men were on a healthy weight and exercised daily. However, the men who ate diets full of junk food had lower sperm counts, and poor sperm quality compared to the other men. Sperm from the men who ate the junk food performed very poorly inside the womb, and they were not even strong enough to fertilize the egg.
So, since we know that junk food can hurt not only sperm counts but sperm quality as well, what can men do to help avoid those negative outcomes? Eating a well balanced and healthy diet is one of the best ways to help sperm counts to stay up, and to help sperm remain healthy.
One of the best things to include in your diet? Omega-3 fatty acids have been proven to help raise sperm counts in men who get plenty of them in their diets. Omega-3s can be found in foods like fatty fish (tuna, mackerel and salmon), and flax seeds. You can also get Omega-3s from leafy greens like kale, spinach and collards.
There are also other nutrients that are important for male fertility. One of the biggest ones is zinc. Zinc is very important for male fertility, because a lack of zinc can actually cause sperm to clump together and can contribute to infertility.
Oysters, dark meat chicken, tenderloin, and beans can all help you to get the zinc content you need in your diet. Vitamin C is also important because it helps to increase sperm motility and mobility. You can get Vitamin C from citrus fruits, and also from strawberries and tomatoes.
Folic acid, while important for women who are trying to conceive, is also important for men. Folic acid can be found in orange juice, leafy greens, and also from enriched cereals. Ask your doctor for any additional tips that you can use to improve your guy’s diet, and in turn, improve his sperm.
