Low Estrogen Levels: Can This Affect Ovulation?

Estrogen is the main hormone involved in female reproduction. All aspects of female reproduction, conception and pregnancy are controlled by estrogen. What does estrogen do?

Estrogen is present during the first half of a woman’s menstrual cycle. It peaks just prior to ovulation and continues to play an important role in the second half of the menstrual cycle as well. If a woman has low estrogen levels, several things can happen. First of all, the woman will probably have symptoms such as headaches, night sweats, hot flashes, and vaginal dryness. A woman’s reproductive system will not function properly if her estrogen levels are too low. This can lead to disrupted cycles, and even cause a woman not to ovulate at all. You will know this if you are tracking ovulation.

If your levels are low

If you have low estrogen levels, it will probably mean one of two things. Either your ovaries are not getting the proper signals to release your eggs, or the ovaries are not physically capable of releasing your eggs. If your ovaries are not getting the proper signals to release the eggs, it can be because of too much exercise, a too low body weight, or an eating disorder. However, if your ovaries are not physically capable of releasing your eggs, it can be that there is a problem with the ovaries themselves that needs to be looked at and addressed. Either of these can be a serious problem regarding your reproductive health, so a doctor should be consulted if you think your estrogen is low.

What can you do?

If you have low estrogen levels, sometimes your doctor can give you estrogen-containing medications to help boost your estrogen levels. There are also a few natural remedies that some women choose for low estrogen levels such as Dong Quai, yams and tofu. Low estrogen can affect not just physical and reproductive health, but also your mental and emotional health as well. If you think that you might have low estrogen levels, ask your doctor to test them for you. The tests to check your levels of estrogen are easy, quick, and pain-free and soon you will be able to know how your estrogen levels look for sure.
