Some bleeding is okay, since 70% of all pregnancies have some bleeding at some point. Spotting, or light bleeding that starts and stops, can be a sign of other problems and still will need to be talked about with your doctor. However, heavy bleeding that doesn’t stop and soaks a pad in about an hour could be a sign of an impending miscarriage. Contact your doctor immediately if you have this type of bleeding.
Some cramping is normal, and you will feel some sort of cramping sensation throughout your whole pregnancy, so it shouldn’t always be a cause for alarm. However, when cramping interferes with your ability to perform daily task, affects your breathing (almost like contractions do), or come along with bleeding, it could mean a miscarriage is about to happen.
Most women don’t notice this before they have a miscarriage, but some may remember after the fact that their pregnancy symptoms seem to have stopped right before they miscarried. This is not an accurate predictor of impending miscarriage however, since a lot of women have no or very few pregnancy symptoms to begin with.
However, if you have been sick your whole pregnancy, and suddenly feel fine, or if your breast tenderness subsides suddenly, you might want to consult your doctor just to be sure that everything is okay. It is always better to consult your doctor if you have any doubts, rather than worry about it on your own.
Sometimes a woman who is getting ready to miscarry will suffer from severe lower back or abdominal pain. This pain is much more severe than regular menstrual cramps. It can also signal an ectopic pregnancy, so check with your doctor if there is a lot of pain involved, and especially if the pain is centered on one side of your stomach only. Also, if you have pelvic pressure that is also paired with bleeding or cramping, that is a bad sign and you need to seek medical advice immediately.
Heavy bleeding that includes passing clots or tissue is a telltale sign of a miscarriage. It may signal that you are passing fetal tissue. You need to contact your doctor at the first sign of this. Your doctor may ask you to collect the tissue for further testing.
If you have had a positive pregnancy test followed by a negative, contact your doctor. Do not assume that the first test was just a false positive. This is a classic sign of ectopic pregnancy or an early miscarriage, and should not be ignored. You might need an ultrasound or bloodwork, so make sure to get yourself seen by a physician if this occurs.
