Premature Ovarian Aging (POA)

Premature Ovarian Aging (POA)

Premature Ovarian Aging can be a traumatic and difficult diagnosis for any women to deal with. What in the world is it, exactly? Well, unlike Premature Ovarian Failure, which refers to women whose ovaries stop working before they reach the age of 40, Premature Ovarian Aging is used to describe women who have elevated FSH levels and a diminished reserve of ovaries. This condition is a lot more common than you might think. Some studies suggest that as many as 25% of women in their 30’s have menopausal symptoms. Claim Your 20 Free Pregnancy Tests – Click Here

Causes of POA

The reasons that Premature Ovarian Aging occurs in some women and not others is still being researched, but doctors have a few ideas as to why some women may be more susceptible. They don’t fully understand all of the aspects of Premature Ovarian Aging, but most doctors think that one of the causes could be an abnormality in self immunity.

There are also some other reasons that some women might be at risk, such as genetics problems, a lack of certain enzymes, gland inflammation that can damage ovarian function, and certain chemical treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. Doctors think the most common reason is an abnormality in self immunity. They think this because around 25% of patients with Premature Ovarian Aging also have self immunity problems with other organs as well.

Contributing causes of POA

There are a few other contributing factors that might affect POA as well. Some of them are smoking, alcohol use, medications or excessive amounts of unhealthy foods in the diet. Stress is also thought to be a contributing factor as well. Some women have little to no symptoms with POA, and still others will not know that they have it unless they have trouble conceiving. A blood test will reveal that they have elevated FSH levels and in turn, POA.

How to prevent POA

While doctors really don’t know too much about Premature Ovarian Aging, and its root causes, they have been able to offer a few tips for women for how to possibly prevent POA from happening to them. One of the main ways that doctors suggest that women prevent POA is by eating a balanced diet and cutting out bad and unhealthy foods.

Getting enough sleep, cutting out unhealthy lifestyle choices, and getting lots of exercise are also good preventives. Also try to cut as much stress out of your life as possible and try to relax. Living a stress free life can go a long way towards making your life much healthier. While the research is still in it’s early stages for POA, doctors are working hard to learn all they can about it.
