The second trimester is one of the very few times during pregnancy that women feel a bit more like themselves, before those end of pregnancy blues and uncomfortable feelings begin to come back. Read on for more info about what happens during your second trimester.

Month Four

During your fourth month, your belly will be beginning to get bigger, and you can probably start to really tell you are pregnant just by your belly. Your baby’s skin is very transparent at this point and a very fine hair begins to form all across your baby’s body. This hair is called lanugo, and it covers your baby’s entire body.

Another really interesting fact? Your baby has fingerprints at this point, covering those little teeny fingertips. You might begin to feel “butterflies” in your stomach sometime during the fourth month, which might actually be your baby’s movements. By the end of the fourth month, your baby weighs around four ounces. Getting bigger, but still a long way to go…..

Month Five

By the fifth month, your doctor should be able to tell you your baby’s sex via an ultrasound, if you want to know if you are having a boy or a girl. Your doctor should also be able to hear your baby’s heartbeat now just by listening with a stethoscope. By now, your baby is covered in a white pasty substance that is known as vernix.

Vernix helps to protect your baby from the amniotic fluid, and when he or she is born, you might even see a little bit of it still hanging around. Your baby’s five senses are beginning to develop at this point, and your baby is also now sucking and swallowing lots of amniotic fluid. This is good practice for eating and drinking once he or she gets here!

Month Six

You are now at the end of your second trimester! Want to hear something really cool? If your baby was delivered right now, it could survive with the help of medical technology. While in the womb, your baby sleeps and wakes in a pattern now, much like he or she will when they get here! Your baby’s brain is getting ready to begin developing at a rapid pace over the next few weeks.

Baby is also now listening to your voice and heartbeat, and can even hear things like sirens, vacumn cleaners and the hair dryer. Your baby is also fully developed now and just needs to fatten up a bit to begin looking like a pleasantly plump newborn! Can you believe by the end of this month, your baby can weigh as much as two and a half pounds?
