Some people think that infertility mostly happens in women and very seldom in men. This is not true. In fact, studies show that in a couple facing infertility, 30% is caused by men and 30% is caused by women. This means there are times infertility doesn’t choose a gender. A semen analysis is conducted on men in order to check the quality of their sperm. This procedure helps a couple figure out if the man needs help or treatment. Here are the three major things that doctors check during a semen analysis.

Low sperm motility

Sperm motility is checked using a semen analysis. Sperm motility scores represent the percentage of sperm that is actively swimming in a forward direction. Low sperm motility is a common cause of infertility. If a man has less active sperm, he can have a low sperm motility which is a factor for infertility.

Low sperm count

A low sperm count is also called oligospermia. A man’s sperm count is considered lower than normal if he has fewer than 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen. Drug use, alcohol, tobacco smoking, emotional stress, and weight are the factors that lead to low sperm count.

Sperm Morphology

Sperm morphology is about the size and shape of sperm. It is one factor that’s examined as part of a semen analysis to evaluate male infertility. A normal sperm has an oval head with a long tail. Abnormal sperm has head or tail defects such as a large or misshapen head or a crooked or double tail.

Before your partner gives his semen sample for lab’s analysis, he should avoid ejaculating for 2 to 3 days. Some semen samples are done at home. In that case, he should use a sterile container to catch the sample. He should immediately rush the sample to the doctor’s office as the analysis has to be done within two hours of collection

You and your partner can expect the results within 24 hrs to a week, however, it could also be more than that, depending on the laboratory used.

If you think you and your partner need help to get pregnant, do not hesitate to seek professional help. If need be, have the both of you checked so that you both know what the possible problem is, if there be any, and what the treatment will be.
