From the very beginning of pregnancy, big changes start to happen. The amniotic sac is formed, where the baby will stay through all of pregnancy, safe and protected from the outside world. The placenta is formed and begins to grow, where it will deliver nutrients to the baby throughout the whole duration of pregnancy. The baby’s face will begin to form, although it won’t look like a face just yet.
It will look sort of like an alien face, with dark holes where the eyes will soon start to grow. The blood cells are beginning to take shape, and soon blood will begin to circulate. By the end of the first month of a woman’s pregnancy, her baby is about the size of a grain of rice!
Even bigger changes begin to happen during month two of pregnancy. The ears will start as tiny fold of skin at the side of the head. Facial features will continue to form and develop. The super important neural tube is by now well formed.
The baby will even begin to move during the second month, although it is still way too soon for the mother to be able to feel anything. At this point during pregnancy, a baby’s head accounts for one third of it’s entire size! At the end of the second month of pregnancy, a baby is typically around one inch long, and weighs around 1/3 of an ounce. Even bigger changes are coming for month three!
The third month of pregnancy is a very important one. Besides being the last month of the first trimester, there are many important physical changes that are occurring at this point. Can you believe that by the end of the third month of pregnancy, a baby is fully formed?
Of course, there is still much more growing to do, but all of the important body parts are fully formed by the end of month three. Babies can open and close their fists by the end of the third month, and even tiny teeth buds are beginning to form.
A baby’s reproductive organs are even developed during month three, but it can be very hard to see from an ultrasound at this point. By the end of month three, a baby usually weighs about one ounce and is about three to four inches long.
