Average Cycles

Of course, there is no way to tell just exactly how long each woman’s cycle will be. Each woman has a different cycle and each woman’s cycle will be different in length. But, there are still some averages that we can go by.

Most women have somewhere around a 28 day cycle, although that can vary greatly from woman to woman. During a “normal” 28 day cycle, a woman usually ovulates on days 13-15, or right around two weeks after her period.

However, these things are so hard to track, since women can have menstrual cycles that vary so greatly from woman to woman. Some cycles are only around 21 days, and some are as long as 35 days, which would put ovulation at a very different time. Even in women who have “normal” cycles, ovulation isn’t always the same time, and can vary.

Follicular Phase

During a woman’s cycle, there are actually three phases that take place: the follicular phase (pre-ovulation), the actual ovulation phase, and the luteal phase (post-ovulation). The follicular phase starts on the first day of your period and lasts until you ovulate, so somewhere around two weeks or so, give or take. The follicular phase is the phase in which your body prepares to release the egg.

Ovulation Phase

Somewhere around two weeks after your period begins, you will come to the actual ovulation phase. The actual ovulation phase is the time during your cycle that you can get pregnant. Ovulation usually occurs somewhere between day 11 and day 21, but the time frame varies so greatly between women, that there is usually no way to tell. Each woman is very different in the time in which they ovulate. However, ovulation is a very quick phase, and usually only lasts around 24 to 48 hours.

Luteal Phase

After ovulation, comes the post ovulation phase that is also known as the luteal phase. The luteal phase begins on the day of ovulation and lasts until the beginning of the next menstrual period. The luteal phase is longer for some women and shorter for others. However, the majority of women have a luteal phase that lasts just about fourteen days.

Sometimes it might last a day or two longer or a day or two shorter? The length of the luteal phase is something that is very important, since the luteal phase must be at least ten days long in order for a woman to have a healthy and viable pregnancy.
