When to Take a Pregnancy Test

The prospect of having a child is a major step in a couple’s life, and most of the time it comes with great excitement. Whether you are trying to have a baby, or you are simply worried that you might have gotten pregnant, you will want to know right away. Missed period

First of all, you will miss your period. This is the first sign that will make you wonder. However, when the fertilized egg gets implanted into the uterus, there might be some bleeding, called implantation bleeding. Implantation bleeding is usually seen as light spotting, but can be misconstrued by many women as a false period. Women who are actively trying to conceive may not wait until a period is missed, as today’s early-result pregnancy tests can detect pregnancy up to 5 days before a missed period.

Nausea

Another very common sign of pregnancy is nausea. Often called morning sickness, you may find yourself feeling very nauseous all the time, not just in the mornings, and you will perceive smells more intense than before. The cause of the nausea is not entirely known, but it is believed to be brought about by the hormonal changes taking place or by an imbalance in blood sugar.

Fatigue

Another sign that it may be time to take a pregnancy test is fatigue. You may feel tired all the time, yet you will not feel much perkier even after you rest. Fatigue is a very common symptom, and if you feel tired for no apparent reason, you should consider the other signs of pregnancy and perhaps buy a pregnancy test. The sheer exhaustion is caused by the increased levels of the hormone progesterone, which literally can put you to sleep while at the same time, lower blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure and increased blood production together drain your energy.

Breast tenderness

Finally, if your breasts feel sore, if they hurt or they seem swollen, this is another sign that you might be expecting. The reason for breast tenderness are the changes beginning to take place in your breasts to produce breastmilk upon birth.

Even if you have noticed some signs that you might be expecting, the best thing is to wait for your period to pass. If you take a pregnancy test sooner than your missed period, the result may give you a false negative, leaving you wondering whether you are truly pregnant or not, causing a possibly unnecessary emotional upheaval for the trying to conceive woman which can be alleviated simply by being patient on taking the pregnancy test.

You can find pregnancy tests in any pharmacy or drug store. Generally, pregnancy tests show the human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) hormone in your blood or urine. The ones you use at home check for the hormone in your urine, so there are no needles involved. They are very easy to use and the results are 95-99% accurate. Regardless of the result, you should make an appointment with your healthcare provider, to verify the results.
