What Happens At Your First Prenatal Doctor’s Visit?

The very first prenatal doctor’s visit can be daunting. You don’t know what to expect and that can actually be scary. But you shouldn’t be worried. The first visit will be a detailed one because your doctor will assess a number of things. Don’t freak out because it is all for your good. Medical History

Your doctor will check your entire medical history to find out if everything is okay with your health. At the same time he will begin paperwork to record everything about your pregnancy. The paperwork will include information about your medical history, the results of each visit, and when your next visit should be. Your doctor will discuss some things with you such as the following:

He will ask you the first date of your LMP or last menstrual period in order to find out a general due date to tell you when baby will be born.
He will also ask whether you used contraceptives in the past.
He will look into your family history to check for medical problems such as genetic issues.
He will ask you about allergies.
He will ask you if you are using any herbs or medications presently.
He will also like to know about your previous pregnancies, miscarriages, or complications if any.

Physical tests

Blood test of course. It will be complete blood work. He will check the levels of your pregnancy hormone or hCG. He will check your hemoglobin to find out if you are anemic. He will also check your blood type and RH factor. Other tests include HIV test, Rubella, Hepatitis B screening, syphilis scrrening, and so on.

Pap smear

He will conduct a Pap smear. This is to check your cervical cells to check for abnormal growth. He will also check for infections such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.

Physical exam

Urine analysis is also very important. The doctor will assess your thyroid, lungs, and heart. In order words, your doctor will conduct a complete physical examination.

Internal tests

Internal tests are usually not conducted during your first visit. However, your doctor may check the uterus and cervix through an internal pelvic exam. He may also measure your pelvis. This is what you can expect during your first visit after pregnancy.

After this?

Through your first trimester and second trimester , and a part of your third trimester you will go to the doctor once a month. He will conduct a number of exams to find out if everything is completely okay. Towards the end your visits will become more frequent. Here is a list of checkups during your monthly visits:

• Weight
• Blood pressure
• Urine check
• A check for too much swelling
• Hemoglobin check again
• Abdominal measurement
• Position of the baby to determine if she is breech
• Fetal heart rate: This will be gone around week twelve.
• Glucose test
• Ultrasound in the twentieth week
• Group B strep culture
• Breast examination
And so on.
